Background
The American Association of University Women was founded in 1882 as the American Association of Collegiate Alumnae.  The name was changed to its present form in 1921.  The Elgin Area Branch was organized in 1920 with 40 charter members.

Our Diversity Statement
In principle and practice, AAUW values and seeks a diverse membership.  There shall be no barriers to full participation in this organization on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin or disability.

Membership
Membership is open to all graduates having associates or equivalent baccalaureate degrees from accredited colleges and universities. An undergraduate student enrolled in a regionally accredited educational institution shall be eligible for student affiliation.

Upcoming AAUW – IL Events

Save the date:  April 23-24, 2021   The Illinois State Convention is going virtual!  Via Zoom With the theme: “Equity Empowers – Speak Out for Equity!”

Friday Evening 4/23: The convention kicks off with Michelle Duster, great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells. The program will focus on confronting systemic racism.

Saturday  4/24:  Begins with an AAUW update. Gloria Blackwell, VP for Programs and Advancement will Zoom in from the National Office.

We will conduct our annual Business Meeting and have two additional speakers, Kimberly Stratton and Dr. Gretchen Goldman.  Ms. Stratton is an engineer and will focus in STEM.  Dr. Goldman will speak about the impact of the pandemic on women.
