FOX VALLEY GARDEN WALK. JUNE 23, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Join the sponsoring Elgin Area American Association of University Women on “A Garden Walk Through Time” as we explore the lovely gardens of West Dundee and Sleepy Hollow. Dundee owes it name to a lottery winner in 1837 who was honored for his entry proclaiming his birthright in Dundee, Scotland. The more recently established Sleepy Hollow area has many hilly streets named for characters in Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”
The eight gardens, easily accessible with the ticket map, will demonstrate the unique character of the West Dundee Sleepy Hollow area. Four of the gardens in the West Dundee area are more mature, friendly and comfortable, easy to relate to for aspiring gardeners. One of the gardens features an array of exclusively native plants. Native plants are our area’s past. Extending back to an undated time, these plants are part of Illinois’s heritage. In the newer developed area of Sleepy Hollow, the gardens are more modern, manicured and yet appealing to the tastes of all gardeners, youthful and mature. Two of our local artists, Susan Massion and Jean Pechtel, will be painting “plein air” at two of the garden sites.
Please join us as we celebrate our local garden heritage in the West Dundee area and its more modern companions in Sleepy Hollow. As Doug Tallamy said,”Gardening is a way of showing that you believe in tomorrow.”
Tickets will be available beginning June 1st at the local Elgin Ace Hardware stores and at the local Elgin Jewel Osco stores. Tickets will also be available at the Jewel Osco store in Dundee and at Heinz Brothers Nursery in St. Charles. Tickets are $15.00 presale and $20.00 on the day of the walk and will be available at each garden site. Eventbrite.com/Fox Valley Garden Walk will also be a ticket sales site. Proceeds for the walk support area scholarships for women.
